MUSIC4KIDS
5 – 10 year olds
Week of September 6, 2011 – Week of May 8, 2012
Music4Kids is a general music class for 5 – 10 year olds that provides an early exploration into music. Students learn the “basics” of music (steady beat, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, melody, harmony, form, improvisation, reading simple notation) through singing, speech ostinati (patterns), listening, dancing, creative movement, music games and playing the recorder. It was created to replace the many general music programs that have been eliminated from elementary school curriculums. HYS provides students with their own recorders and gives them access to guitars and ukulele. Each semester includes a performance showcasing student learning. Students will be expected to practice at home and complete homework assignments, when given.

The Boys & Girls Club Band targets students who do not or cannot take music in their secondary schools and homeschool students in need of musical outlets. Resulting from a partnership with the Music Center of Hawaii, HYS provides all the instruments and equipment to participants at no cost. This program includes two concerts in a formal concert hall setting. This program is not intended to replace instruction delivered by school band directors. The course is geared towards beginners or those with little experience on a band instrument, and will teach students how to play an instrument alone and in an ensemble, basic note reading, articulation and rhythm. Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis to ensure satisfactory progress made. In addition, all students are expected to perform in two formal concerts in December and April. Exemplary behavior is required of all students at all times. Classes are taught by Wayne Fanning, band director at Niu Valley Middle School.
