chamber music program

The Chamber Music Program began in October 2006 to help HYS students develop their musicality as well as skills such as assessment, empowerment, teamwork, leadership, communication, consensus building and confidence. These skills are developed within an environment that is structured yet flexible, disciplined yet inspiring. This program is Hawaii’s only statewide chamber music program for youth.
The Chamber Music Program typically has openings for the following groups:
String Quartets
Brass Quintets
Woodwind Quintets
Students will be selected from applications by the Music
Director and their conductors. Criteria will include a student’s
musical maturity, compatible skill level and ability to
commit required time to the program.
Each chamber group will be assigned a coach who will meet
with them for approximately 20 hours each season. Specific
times and places of meetings will be determined by each
group.
Performance is a key component of the program as it gives
students an opportunity to present their music. Two mandatory
recitals will be scheduled at Orvis Auditorium, UH Music
School in January and May. In addition, students will be
asked to complete two community service performances.
