hys academy - boys & girls club programs

The Hawaii Youth Symphony, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, is offering two FREE music programs (see class descriptions and registration information below) as part of its Music in the Clubhouse initiative. Classes are open to any interested student. All instruction, materials and instruments are provided by the Hawaii Youth Symphony. Space is limited. A $1 annual membership fee to the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii is required for participation. This $1 fee allows the member access to any Boys & Girls Clubhouse on Oahu and Kauai, with eligibility to participate in other Boys & Girls Club activities.

Both classes meet in the 2nd-floor of the Spalding Clubhouse, located at 1704 Waiola Street, behind Washington Middle School. Classes are held 2 times a week, beginning in August and will run throughout the school year. There are no classes during intersession breaks and school holidays.

Music progress is dependent upon frequent meetings with instructors. Students are expected to attend classes on a regular basis and to participate fully in activities. Classes also include visits and workshops by special guests such as Jake Shimabukuro and other island musicians.

Music4Kids is a general music class for 5 - 10 year olds. Students will also be exposed to classical music and learn about the instruments of the orchestra. Students will be expected to practice at home and complete homework assignments, when given.

boys and girls club band
For ages 10 years and older
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:30 - 5:50 pm

This class provides an opportunity for students who do not have access to a band program at their school.  It is not intended to replace instruction delivered by school band directors. Instruments and supplies are provided by the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Music Center of Hawaii. The course is geared towards beginners or those with little experience on a band instrument, and will teach students how to play an instrument alone and in an ensemble, basic note reading, articulation and rhythm. Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis to ensure satisfactory progress made. In addition, all students are expected to perform in two formal concerts in December and April. Exemplary behavior is required of all students at all times. Classes are taught by Wayne Fanning, band director at Niu Valley Middle School. Click here to view a recent article about the program.
