HYS holds an annual essay contest to give our students a chance to express themselves outside as well as within our rehearsal halls. We know our students have a lot to say about music and its effects on our world. Annual themes and topics are assigned by age divisions. Cash prizes and opportunities to publish portions or all of your writing are part of the contest. Cash prizes range from $30 – $150! Essays are accepted in three categories: Division III, grades 2-6 (1st place: $50; 2nd place: $30), Division II, grades 7-9 (1st place: $80; 2nd place: $60) and Division I, grades 10-12 (1st place: $150; 2nd place: $100).
Contest deadline is typically in late October. Winners are announced right after Thanksgiving. We will alert students and post information on this website in September regarding the next “write and win” opportunity!
