“Unlike Oahu, Maui doesn’t offer any music programs like HYS. I am very fortunate to be able to play with such a talented orchestra. Through HYS I’ve learned and experienced new things and made lifelong friends.” – Maui High School, bassoonist
The Hawaii Youth Symphony needs your help to continue nurturing our children through music. With a commitment to keeping our programs affordable and accessible to all students who are interested in music, HYS fees cover only 20% of our operating costs. HYS also offers a robust financial aid program, distributing more than $30,000 a year registration fees, instrument rentals, private lesson reimbursements and travel subsidies for students living on the neighbor islands. HYS never wants financial need to be a barrier to participation. But we need your help.
You can make unrestricted contributions, leaving it to HYS management to use the funds where they are most needed, or make restricted gifts to designated areas. Gifts can be planned to reflect a donor’s specific interest or accommodate a particular tax situation. For more information, please call Randy Wong, Executive Director, at (808) 941-9706.
Annual fund gifts are extremely important to helping HYS close the gap between registration and other fees and actual operational costs. Gifts received from annual appeals or solicitations are used to meet operating expenses such as music programming, financial aid, rehearsal space rental, concert production costs, neighbor island tours, workshops, music and instrument maintenance.
Thanks to the foresight and generosity of Dr. Jonathan Y. C. Ching, HYS has established an alumni endowment fund. This fund was opened at the request of Dr. Ching’s family to ensure that HYS is able to recruit and retain the very finest music educators. HYS and the Ching family encourage other alumni to contribute to this fund and give future generations the opportunity to experience the same positive benefits that they did from the Youth Symphony.
Olivia De Jane, HYS greatest benefactor, established a financial aid endowment fund. This fund was opened at the request of Ms. De Jane to ensure that no child be turned away from an opportunity to particiapte in HYS programs.
Many corporations support their employees by matching gifts to non profits of their choice. Please check with your company to see if they have a matching program and a form you may send in with your gift to HYS. This is a relatively easy way to increase your impact on our programs.
Gifts of Stock
HYS is outfitted to accept contributions in different forms, including stock gifts, which often provide additional tax benefits to donors.
Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of someone special. Note cards advising the honoree or family members of your gift can be mailed at the time a gift is received by HYS if proper contact information is provided with your gift.
A Worthy Beneficiary
You can make a significant contribution to HYS and receive considerable tax advantages by designating the Hawaii Youth Symphony as a beneficiary in your will, living trust, retirement plan or insurance policy. It is a way to enjoy the benefits of giving while retaining full use of your property.
