Audition FAQs – Combo Program

What is a ``combo``?

A “Combo” is a small ensemble that plays nonclassical styles, like jazz, pop, and commercial music. The heart of any Combo is its rhythm section (amplified or electric guitar, amplified or electric bass, piano or keyboard, drum set). In addition, the HYS Combo will also accept saxophone, trumpet, and trombone students.

Am I eligible to audition?

This table outlines age eligibility for the 2018-2019 season. HYS accepts students through grade 12 only. To ensure fairness, we DO NOT make exceptions to age eligibility.

How much does the audition cost?

The audition fee is $15.

Can I audition for two instruments?

No. HYS will only allow auditions on one instrument per student.

If I am accepted, how much does it cost?

In order to provide quality programs, HYS spends over $2,000 per student. The tuition for the Combo will be as follows:

  • $1,200 for students who participate for the full year, July 2018 – May 2019
  • $900 for students who participate during the school year only, August 2018 – May 2019
  • $450 for students who participate during the summer Pacific Music Institute session only, July 1-15, 2018
Is financial aid available?

Need-based financial aid is available for registration fees, private lessons or instrument rental. You may request a financial aid application upon registration or download the application from our Financial Aid page. All financial aid is on a reimbursement basis.

If I am accepted, what is expected of me?

Joining HYS means that you are making a year-long commitment. You must: 1) attend all rehearsals and concerts, 2) practice and prepare your music, and 3) abide by all rules of conduct and HYS policies.

When are rehearsals?

Rehearsals will be held every Saturday afternoon from August through May. Students are expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts.

Do I have to take private lessons?

We highly recommend you take private lessons to enhance your HYS experience.

What if I am a current HYS student?

All students must audition for the Combo program.
