Update on PMI 2020

Friday, April 10, 2020

Dear PMI Applicants and Families,

After thoughtful discussion, the Hawaii Youth Symphony has decided to cancel this summer’s Pacific Music Institute given the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the dynamics of traveling students and faculty, access to facilities, and more, it has become clear that we would not be able to offer PMI as envisioned. All applicants will have their application fee refunded.

For over 30 years, PMI has defined premiere musical experiences for young musicians. We continue to grow our exciting partnership with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, bringing together some of the world’s brightest and most celebrated artists. Beyond symphonic music, our programs have expanded to include the Summer Jazz Intensive led by Dean Taba, the Solo & String Quartet program led by Iggy Jang, and the Ukulele Workshop led by Jake Shimabukuro. The universal joy of music connects us all, and there’s a place for everyone at PMI.

While the decision to cancel this year’s programming has been difficult, the collective strength of the music community is unstoppable. We are developing plans for an epic PMI 2021, and will be sharing updates in the coming months. HYS will also continue to explore different ways to provide students with opportunities for musical growth this year.

We understand you may have additional questions, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at pmi@hiyouthsymphony.org.  Thank you for your support and understanding. Stay safe and healthy, and we look forward to seeing you next summer!

Aloha, The PMI Staff
